Long Weekends are Wonderful

Three day weekends really do make a world of difference.  More time with the kids, more time for housework and errands, more time to have fun!

Saturday, we went to a local winery for a big picnic to celebrate our good friend Alisa's birthday.  The weather was perfect and the babies were really well behaved!  We were there almost the whole afternoon and they happily rolled around on the blanket and slugged their bottles:)

Happy babies!

Sunday, we pulled out our baby pool for the first time and let them splash around.  We quickly realized that this will be much more enjoyable for all when they can sit themselves (hopefully soon!)  but it was fun nonetheless!

Playing on the deck in our whale pool!
Andrew concentrating on his pool toys
And Paige trying to decide how this is different from her bath...
Speaking of sitting, we are making great progress in that department.  They are both easily sitting with support and every once in a while, they can hold their balance for a few seconds!  They are also rolling back and forth like crazy and use this maneuver to get to things they can't reach.

Lounging at Alisa & Brian's
Finally able to reach  my hanging toys!
Rolled across the blanket to get to my ball!
Andrew is definitely going to be our active one, as he is already trying to figure out how to climb out of his bouncy seat.  It is amazing to think just a few months ago, he was way too SMALL for this same chair...

Andrew at 8 weeks (just before his due date)
And now we like to lean all the way forward and try to climb out!
Sunday we had a visit from Paige's godfather, DJ.  He is already setting the standards high and teaching Paige bad habits -- he brought her (and Andrew) her first little blue box from Tiffany's!

Spoiled already:)
We are already greatly enjoying the nice weather and are super excited for the summer - although will need lots of sunscreen and hats as we are super pale:)

Happy and ready for summer!
We loved our long, warm weekend!
Hope you had a great Memorial Day Weekend, too!

Time is Flying!

The last couple weeks have been super busy - I feel like I am so far behind with updates. So brace yourself, this will be a long post:)

First off, we had our big appointment at Georgetown almost two weeks ago.  I am always anxious for that appointment, as they are the pros at tracking preemie growth, the best at managing reflux, and the big decision makers for nutritional changes.  The stats from that visit were amazing - Andrew weighed 15.8 lbs and his length was 25.5 inches, Paige weighed 13.9 lbs and her length was 26 inches.  They both plotted very nicely on the NORMAL growth curve (not adjusting for prematurity)! Obviously, we were all very pleased.  There were a couple issues I wanted to discuss with them though.  Both Paige and Andrew were having serious constipation issues and I was having to manage stools with suppositories - not fun for any of us!  Andrew has also had a recurrence of his reflux and was having a very hard time sleeping.  He was refusing to sleep in his crib or anywhere that required him to lay back at all.  They made some recommendations which seem to be working so far....first, we switched their formula from the 22cal/oz preemie formula to regular ole' Enfamil!  This made me SO happy, as its much easier to find and a little cheaper:)  We are hoping this helps with their constipation. We also decided to start solids (see previous post) and chose oatmeal and sweet potatoes to start to hopefully get things moving if ya know what I mean:)  We of course had reinstated all of Andrew's reflux precautions when his symptoms starting coming back but they also put him back on twice daily prevacid and we start maalox.  He has been doing better with all of these changes and has successfully sleep in his crib the last two nights only getting up once. HUGE improvement!  We'll head back to Georgetown in mid July.

Immediately after the Georgetown appointment, Jack and I left town for the weekend, as I was in a good friend's wedding (also Paige's godmother!) in Charleston, South Carolina.  Here we are:

At the reception!
Ashley & Jason!

Leaving the babies for the first time was way harder than I anticipated. Luckily, my parents stayed at our house and kept them in their routine, so I knew they were in good hands...but this was the first time I'd been separated from them since they were in my belly 13 months ago.  We survived and had a great time, but I'd be lying if I told you we didn't think about them ALL the time:)  Vacations really will never be the same - they will either be with us (which will be crazy!) or they won't be (and we'll be thinking about them non-stop!).  Thanks Mom & Dad for giving up your relaxing weekend, losing sleep with Andrew, and tolerating non-stop action/feeding/diaper changes for 3 whole days.  We owe you big time!!!

This past week, we also had our first visit from a Fairfax County Occupational Therapist.  The county is currently short permanent therapists, so they sent the woman that did our assessment to get us started.  She is great and taught us all sorts of exercises to work on sitting, weight bearing, muscle tone, Paige's tongue problems, and even massage for constipation.  We've already noticed a big difference - esp with Paige on her sitting ability and weight bearing.  I cannot tell you how much easier our lives will get when these two can SIT independently and HOLD their own bottles!  It will actually be possible for one person to bathe, feed and get the kids down for bed. That will be HUGE!

Last weekend was also crazy and one thing the babies and I did was go to the Congenital Heart Walk downtown with my work.  It was a great event with a good turnout and a huge amount of money was raised for research and care of patients with congenital heart disease.

Paige ready to walk!
Andrew right before his meltdown:)
And now we're happy and ready to walk!

Last Sunday was Paige and Andrew's seven month birthday.  Time really is flying and I cannot tell you how fun they are both becoming!  All you have to do is look at Paige and she smiles and often screams and laughs out loud. She has the sweetest disposition and you cannot help but be so happy when you're around her. Andrew is constantly babbling and has big stories to tell.  He has the greatest belly laugh and is so much fun and such a joy to be around.

Paige - 7 months
Screaming and laughing in her swing!
Andrew - 7 months
Curious and into EVERYTHING already!

Despite how busy we are, and how hard things are sometimes with balancing work, the babies, and all of our other responsibilities, we continue to remind each other each day how lucky we are.  We've got two amazing babies who are doing SO well and have overcome SO much!

Quick Post

There is lots to report, but little time as its 10:30pm and I am exhausted and ready for bed!  Blog posts are coming about our Georgetown Neonatal Clinic appt last Thursday, Mommy and Daddy's first trip away, and lots of changes that are being made this week. One BIG thing I wanted to quickly share is.....we started SOLIDS!

Checking it out...
Tasting!
And deciding if we like it...
Andrew's turn to investigate...
And taste!
They both actually did pretty well.  They are quickly figuring out how the spoon works and Andrew holds his mouth constantly open for more like a bird - surprise that he likes to eat, right?!?:)   We have started with oatmeal and will try some sweet potatoes later this week.  What a yummy diet, huh?

More to come when things get a little less crazy...

Infant and Toddler's Program

Tomorrow will be two weeks since our assessment with Fairfax County for the Infants and Toddlers Program (most of you probably know this as Early Intervention). Things went well at our assessment and there were no big surprises.

While Paige began doing most things first (lifting her head, grasping onto things, rolling), we had noticed recently that Andrew was quickly surpassing her.  This held true during the assessment.  They were quite impressed with Andrew's strength and skills and thought he was right on track with their adjusted age (4 months).  The only concern with him was that he has a slight head tilt which will be addressed with OT (occupational therapy).  Paige did great, as well, but was measuring out to be a little closer to the three month mark.  She is hypotonic (has lower muscle tone), which makes motor skills a bit more difficult for her.  The best way to describe it is to say she's a little more floppy.  How do we overcome this?  By doing lots of strengthening.  As many of you may have also noticed in her pictures, Paige also has a fixation with her tongue.  It is constantly hanging out of her mouth (thus producing massive amounts of dripping saliva!) and was delaying her ability to make sounds and coo.  She has already found a way to work around this and now finds her ability to let out a high pitched scream hysterical:) but her tongue still doesn't know quite what to do with itself. This will also be addressed by OT with sessions in our home every other week.

Considering their gestational ages, birth sizes, and hospital course, they were all very impressed with Paige and Andrew.  These are all simple problems to hopefully correct early so that they can get caught up as soon as possible.  Otherwise, we will just be working with them to meet developmental milestones quickly. The hope is that by 18 months their development will catch up to their age (no more correcting) and we will have another assessment at that point to ensure it has happened.  If it hasn't, it just means that we qualify for more services.

The last part of our VERY long assessment meeting was the write very specific goals for them over the next year and to decide on services.  An occupational therapist will be assigned to Paige and Andrew and should be contacting us any day now.  The county has 30 days from our assessment date to get services in our home.  We are down to 16 more days and you bet I'm counting:)

Below are some pictures from the weekend (they have nothing to do with this post...but I get yelled at when I post with no pictures!)

Baptism

Paige and Andrew were finally baptized last Saturday.  Because of their prematurity and isolation through the colder months to avoid RSV or flu, we had to wait until they were 6 months.  Not only were we excited for the ceremony, but this was their big debut!  They had not met many of our relatives and family friends and this event was a perfect celebration of what we have been through and accomplished.  The event was a little bigger than we originally planned:) (my mom called it a small wedding!) but we had the most perfect day with beautiful weather, an amazing service, support from our most favorite people, and a great party!  Below are several photos but there are many more in the picasa album.
